Our Story
Well, let me think back a bit.
Well back a few years ago in 2004 a group of web developers, designers, tech writers and others were working together for this
pretty successful ecommerce and catalog company in North Miami Beach. Let's just say they had sales over $500 million.
It was around this time period I met my wife, who worked with me at this company as a designer and business analyst. Almost everybody
who worked for this company hated the management. However, if you asked around, people would say, hey, I don't love them
but they are the best I can do for work in south florida. Good south florida employers are hard to come by, and this one
was not perfect, but there were some perks to work there.
Every few months our Director of Ecommerce would come and go. They were typically fired. And like everybody else that worked with us
they got a box outside their cubicle or office door, just enough to take home their personal belongings. When you were let go, layed off or fired here, they
escorted you out the door! In fact we had so many Directors of Ecommerce that I started to think, hey if these men and women had been able
to review a service, an "Employer Scorecard" they would have been able to make an informed decision.
This means that there is no negative survey or positive survey results. Hey, some people want to work at a place that is slow paced or run by a Castro like dictator! Some like it hot, some don't.
This is not a competition survey, it is a measurement you can use to determine how happy you will be at this company. It is the caveat emptor of employment. You never know what a job will be like until you get there. At least we are giving you a chance here to get an understanding of what it will be like!
So, my designer wife put together a web design and I programmed the survey in PHP/mysql. In fact, for the first 5 years the
site was rarely touched. Then around 2008 or so, we started to see some pick up in traffic and few of you wrote to me, asking me
what the deal was, and if it really worked, and if we could fix the bugs, which we have been fixing.
Another inspiration for EmployerScorecard.com comes from examining and studying career networking. As most of us know most employment opportunities
are gained through career networking.
By networking, we mean going to an industry sponsored event, through an alumni connection, a family member or somehow, somewhere knowing somebody who has access to a job!
So, why Employer Scorecard? Well, if you have ever been to an industry sponsored event or conference or business card exchange, you would probably find the most talked about topic is one's current employer, other than a sales rep trying to sell you something.
People naturally compare notes with one another about one's job.
Employer Scorecard takes this common offline activity and makes it virtual and extensible.
And one more thing. Have you ever received a call from somebody who knew somebody who is about to take a job with your firm or in your profession. Well, this is a virtual way to tell that person what you think, good or bad, on a quantitative basis. We hope it serves it's purpose. And Goodluck.
